Picking the ideal report rate for your G-Series mouse is a give/take thing: You can improve the number of times per second the mouse updates its movement to the computer (making the mouse feel smoother and more responsive), but this has a direct impact on your CPU. So, what’s the effect of picking too high of a report rate? Check out the timedemo I did on a test system: The left one was at 250 reports/second, and the right was 1000/second. For most of the test, the FPS averages were quite similar, but at the moment when the CPU was working the hardest, there was a really significant FPS drop.

This is the rule of thumb for picking your ideal report rate: If you have an i5 equivalent or better CPU, you can use 500 or 1000 reports a second without real impact ( <1% performance difference usually). If you have an older PC or a laptop that doesn’t have a dedicated graphics card, you may want to select 250 per second, then test up to 500 reports per second.

It’s tempting to think more=better, but with mouse report rate, it’s all about finding the sweet spot between CPU and mouse. 250 reports per second is still twice as fast as a typical non-gaming mouse and will feel noticeably smoother, so if you have an older PC, try giving that report rate a try. On the other hand, if you have a PC that’s the envy of all of your friends, go ahead and set it at 1000 reports per second for the most responsive tracking possible.
